THE ORIGINS OF SHROPSHIRE GOJU RYU ACADEMY

Sensei Max Beddow started training in full contact karate in 1988 and after about 8 years he felt that it was time to make a change, and over 30 years later he is still learning and training in the pursuit of knowledge in the way of the empty hand.

It all began in 1995 when the group opened its doors under the guidance of Sensei Keith Pace from Moreton, Wirral. With regular round trips of 160 miles, Sensei Max Beddow sought knowledge and guidance from Sensei Keith.

Sensei Keith's instructor had been Sensei Gary Spiers who had trained with Sensei Morio Higaonna (The founder of the IOGKF) who, inturn had been trained by Sensei An'Ichi Myagi who had been a deciple of the founder of Goju Ryu as an art, Renshi Chojun Myagi whose image is proudly displayed in the banner above.

Sensei Keith founded the San Gan Kai (School of Three Principles) and it was with his guidance that Broseley Dojo trained.
Sadly, Sensei Keith passed away in 2008. His training and legacy can be seen and felt in the core of the Dojo and the attitude of the students to this day.

During that time Sensei Max expanded his knowledge through personal research and the guidance of practioners such as Sensei Terry O'Neill (8th Dan KUGB) who started his journey at the Red Triangle Club in Liverpool, and with Steve Morris who has been studying all aspects of martial arts for over 50 years.
Sensei Max was approached by Sensei Roy Flatt (8th Dan) in 2013 and was invited to join the English Goju Ryu Karate Association (EGKA) and is now proud to be training as part of a bigger Goju Ryu family.
When Sensei Sheryl Maybin approached Sensei Max with the idea of teaching infants and juniors Sensei Max formed the Shropshire Goju ryu Karate Acadamy (SGKA) in 2016. The Academy has had extensive success in competitions at all ages Regionally and Nationally as well as producing four Junior 1st Dan's to date.

In 2019 at the 40th anniversary of IOGKF a karate Gishiki (ceremony) was held on Okinawa where Sensei Max successfully graded to 6th Dan IOGKF.

Shropshire Goju Ryu Karate Academy is the only recognised EGKA affiliated dojo in the west midlands and we pride ourselves on being open minded and open to new ideas. A typical night's training involves all aspects of traditional martial arts; with regular practice of kata, kihon, kumite, body conditioning, traditional resistance training, bag work etc...
With no previous martial arts experience necessary, you are never too old to train in a traditional martial art. Come and train in a safe and friendly enviroment where all are made welcome.

Safety of our classes is paramount. Instructor Sensei Max Beddow maintains current DBS checks and is certificated in first aid training.
